Job Scope & Purpose:

Our Cambridge base client focused in synthetic biology is seeking talented Immunology Scientist to join their ranks.  An important emphasis of this position will be to establish and leverage mammalian in vivo model systems to address key questions about the efficacy of our engineered probiotics operating within the gastrointestinal system  for modulation of the immune system. The successful candidate will work with our internal team and our leadership team as well as external experts and CROs to implement novel experimental systems, characterize immune responses and  identify biomarkers in the body. Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop new animal models or validate existing models for the treatment of IBD and other inflammatory diseases.
  • Coordinate animal studies with external collaborators
  • Lead in vivo pharmacology studies: design, coordinate and execute in vivo studies to screen engineered biotics in relevant animal models and advance our understanding of the host/ engineered bacteria interaction.
  • Establish new assays (gene/protein expression, FACS assays, microscopy, ELISA/ ELISPOT assays, chemical analyzer, etc) needed to evaluate activity of engineered bacteria in vitro and in vivo.
  • Develop and run in vitro immunological assays (with DCs, macrophages, T cells) needed to deconvolve mechanisms of bacterial interaction (direct or indirect) with immune cells.
  • Expected to spend at least 50%  in the laboratory.
  • Analyze and present data to team members and leadership team.

Primary Job Requirements:

  • PhD in immunology with at least 2 to 5 years of post-doc experience in academia or industry.
  • Gastrointestinal/ mucosal  immunology expertise including  areas like development of immune system and maintenance of immune homeostasis in the gut, cross-talk between microbiome and immune system (innate and adaptive),  microbial modulation of immune responses, development of colitis and IBD.
  • Experience in research and development with complex animal models for immune diseases including development of in vivo models and their applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities
  • Strong publication track record
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills, some experience in managing and training people
  • Experience working in cross functional multidisciplinary teams is a plus.
